Remaining Changed

March 23, 2009

Had you never changed
I would not have known
What I was losing

But you did change
And now I know my loss

Dreaming of a second chance
Another changing, another turn
Until we finally meet

Yet you remain changed
Without any sign of relenting

They say “some things never change”
And “dogs return to their vomit”
And mumble things about old dogs and new tricks

Sometimes regardless of conditioning
You can’t change the nature of the beast

Outwardly you may attempt to make a difference
But inside remains forever
The true nature

What, then, can be done?
Nothing.

Biram

February 19, 2009

You raised the child
Whose dad had died,
You never left
The emperor’s side.

You ran the empire
With love and truth,
Yet fate would fail
To honor you.

When you walked away,
When your job was done,
When your fight was fought,
And your battles won,

You were on your way
To the pilgrim’s home,
As the child you raised
Sat high on his throne

And some greedy thieves,
Took more than your gold,
More than just things
That can be bought and sold,

They took your dreams,
Your hopes, your fears,
They took your happiness,
Anger and tears,

For no good reason,
You died that day,
And those who killed you
Walked away.

Changed

February 3, 2009

You’ve changed.
I hardly recognize you.
You look away, walk away
turn away, run away.

You used to run to me
But now you run away.
You used to talk to me
But now you talk vaguely
In my direction.
You used to find joy
In looking for me,
But now the searching
Irritates you.

All that you used to be
Is now in question
All that you used to know
Is now unsure
All that you used to say
Has now been silenced
All the memories we held
Have been forgotten

Because you’ve changed.

Or maybe it’s just me.

The Last Thing

January 20, 2009

What was that?
The last thing you said?
Did you mean it?
Was it from your rotten heart?

You know…

When you ripped my heart out
Straight from my chest
And stomped on it repeatedly
Even though I had already died

When you spit in my face
And screamed words of contempt
And laughed at my sorrow
And got pleasure from my pain

Your wickedness knows no bounds
You love to hurt people
You find fulfillment in torture
And solitude in the discomfort of others

And some are left
To live and die with your words
The last thing you said
That final statement
From the depths of your lifeless soul

Thank You For Staying

December 22, 2008

When you were turned off
When you wanted to leave
When you thought of walking away

When you were scared
When your life was difficult
When you had better things to do

When you needed answers that I didn’t have
When the answers I did give were wrong
When the sky was cloudy and the room empty

Thank you for staying.

Saving Me

November 29, 2008

Though you may not know it
You are saving me
Though you may not see it
You are giving me life

You may not understand it,
But I cherish who you are
You probably don’t think about it much
But you are never far from my mind

You may not like me
But I love you nonetheless
You may not even know me
But I feel like I’ve known you forever

Though you may not realize it,
You are saving me
And for this,
I’ll forever be grateful.

Love Affair

November 13, 2008

It’s not everyday that you find a person that you can relate to so incredibly well that it’s almost mystical. Of all the people you’ll meet in your life, it’s likely that there will be very, very few like “this”.

It’s not everyday that you find a person who has something to teach you so profound, that it changes your life and your outlook permanently, leaving you better, never the same.

It’s not everyday that you find not just one of these special individuals, but a seemingly unending supply of them just waiting to share their stories.

But this is what it seems I’ve found…

in the pages of some books on Indian history that I picked up recently. Ah, history books. Sometimes it’s a little more work to read them, but if you just give them a chance, they can impact you and your thinking in all sorts of wonderful ways.

History used to bore me. Now I can’t imagine life without it.
